1. "Wait, what? I have to read 40 books this year?"
The answer is yes. In Language Arts, the homework every night is 20 minutes of reading. If you are consistently reading 20 minutes each night, you will have no problem reaching 40 books by the end of the school year.
2. "Is the forty book challenge a grade?"
Yes and no. You are graded on your reading status. Status is a way for the teacher to track your reading and hold you accountable for your 30 minutes of reading daily. To receive a score of a 100, you should aim to read about 140 pages per week (20 pages per day). Please let me know if you have chosen to read a challenging book when I take status so that you are not penalized for reading at a slower pace.
3. "How do I survive the 40BC?"
- Record, record, record. Always record your books on your book list.
- Remember to use your resources for book suggestions. Librarian, teachers, friends, internet, etc.
- Try to connect nonfiction to the fiction you are currently reading.
- Make a goal to finish 15-20 books by January.
- Do not wait until the last minute (end of the year) to fit in genres you “think” you dislike!
4. "What if my book is over 400 pages?"
In that case, your book will count as two books on your 40BC book list.
5. "How do you count graphic novels/manga?" (Or any picture-formatted text)
If this is YOUR genre, then I encourage you to keep reading! Remember that there is minimal text on these pages, so I may count the page limit differently if this is a genre you are consistently reading when I check status.
6. "What do I get when I read all 40 Books?"
When you read all 40 books for the year, you will receive an immense sense of satisfaction and pride! Not only that, but I will be incredibly proud of you! We do this not for a party or a physical reward, but to find and develop a love of reading, which in turn helps you to become a critical thinker and thoughtful member of the community around you.
